Wendy Jane's Weekend Sounds: Suit and Tie by Justin Timberlake (and deconstructing Macklemore's Thrift Shop)

Wow, two blue-eyed soul singers in a row--last week was Macklemore's Thrift Shop, and this weekend, I'm listening to Justin Timberlake's, Suit and Tie. While the video sometimes reminds me of a slick cologne advertisement, and I agree with friends that Jay-Z's rap is more of an interruption than a positive contribution, Justin's falsetto, and the retro dance soul beat have me dancing all over the living room...that is until my daughters shout out,..."Mom, stop!...you're embarrassing!."Enjoy!And, I couldn't resist posting a link to Slate's Culture Gabfest podcast that includes a few music and culture critics breaking down the phenomena of Macklemore's huge hit, Thrift Shop which was featured on last weekend's Sounds section here.Listen to the woman who tries to find every which way to say that the song may be offensive to what she separates out as black hip-hop culture, as in when the song talks about paying $50 for a Gucci t-shirt, or how perhaps the poor people who really have to shop at Goodwill will be offended by the white middle-class privileged people who shop there for fun and fashion, or that Macklemore is naive for believing he is creating an anti-brand brand by espousing thrift shopping.  Then listen to Slate's music critic, Jody Rosen's, just answers.Silly, white people!
