Happy New Year: WJSS Weekend Sounds: George Michael and Queen - Find Me Somebody To Love
On Christmas Day, after a year of tremendous loss of once-in-a-lifetime artists like Prince and David Bowie, among others, the soulful George Michael passed away at the age of 53. I must say that as I listened to and watched video after video of his hits like Freedom, Faith, and Careless Whisper, and going back even earlier to his Wham days with Wake Me Up and Everything She Wants, I realized what a huge presence he was in my 80's and 90's music (read: MTV) landscape.George Michael was an artist who openly expressed his male sexuality, and spoke up to normalize gay love. Even after he came out as gay, us gals still crushed on him, though. It was good to hear he was a quiet philanthropist, a generous soul. And, like people tried to label Prince as an addict at the end of his life, people of course are remembering that George Michael did actually struggle with addiction. Hopefully he will be most remembered for the gifts he gave to the world through his talent, and for the good human being he surely seemed to be.Sharing here, George Michael's version of Queen's Somebody To Love at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert for AIDS Awareness held at Wembley Stadium in London in 1992. The song's sound, which Queen says was influenced by Aretha Franklin and gospel, is about faith, desperation and soul-searching. The lyrics in the last stanza read:Got no feel, I got no rhythm I just keep losing my beat (you just keep losing and losing) I'm OK, I'm alright (he's alright, he's alright) I ain't gonna face no defeat I just gotta get out of this prison cell One day (someday) I'm gonna be free, LordFind me somebody to love [repeat] Can anybody find me somebody to love? We all need love. We all deserve freedom. Let's find us somebody to love. Let's love everybody.I sincerely thank all of you for riding along with me in 2016. Hang on for dear life in 2017. I have high hopes for all of us to use our love to prevail. Love wins. Every time. _________SOURCE: Somebody To Love Lyrics, by Queen, via www.azlyrics.comVideo: George Michael & Queen - Somebody To Love, www.youtube.com, posted by neaziynh
