Go Figure?! Wendy Jane Heads to Whitest State in the Nation for Summer Vacay

I leave today for summer vacation with my two daughters.  We're going to Old Orchard Beach, Maine.  I'd heard it's fun for kids-- seven miles of beach, and an old-timey pier bestowing kitschy delights made up of air-brush tattoos, hair braiding, and french fries in a cone.The other day while obsessing about race, like you know I almost always am, I started thinking (I think I about this one a lot) about how it must feel for black people to so often be in the position of being:  the one black person in the office, the one black person at a social gathering, the one black person on the bus.  I wonder how it feels to always have to be so conscious of one's race on a daily basis.Then I started to think about how lily-white parts of New England can be, and just on a hunch I thought I might be heading to the whitest state in the nation for my summer vacation.  So, I looked it up, and lo and behold, Maine is the whitest state in the nation with 96.9 percentage of the population described as white, according to a 2012 census posted on www.abcnews.go.com.The article said that one thought is that African Americans weren't attracted to move to the Northern New England states because there wasn't the same kind of industrial work that drew black workers from the South during the 1930's and 1940's.  I think black people must also have a lot more sense than white folks.  The ocean water in Maine is ice cold, and the older I get, the harder it is to deal with New England winters.I know you're curious, so here are the Top 10 Whitest States in America.  If you're looking for diversity in your surroundings, you will not find it here:MaineVermontNew HampshireWest VirginiaIowaWyomingIdahoMontanaKentuckyNorth Dakota Well, I'll have to do without diversity during my vacation, and I will be going off-line for the rest of the week, and won't be blogging, but, yes, will still be writing my daily Facebook poems, so you can catch me there!  Have a great week, everyone!  And, next time you're out and about, take a look at your surroundings, and see how much color there is.
